Head Doctor: Dr. Steven M. Dowell
Dr. Dowell was born and raised in the beautiful Pacific Northwest city of Tacoma, Washington. He graduated from Western Washington University where he received an exercise science/pre-medicine degree with an emphasis in physical therapy and athletic training. Following his graduation from Western Washington, Dr. Dowell moved to San Jose, California and attended Palmer College of Chiropractic West. While in school he was twice the head athletic trainer for the school hockey team and was active in both amateur and professional sporting events as a student doctor. Upon graduation, Dr. Dowell was selected as a member of Who's Who in America's Colleges and Universities and was awarded the Dr. Virgil Strang Philosophy award. Twice he has traveled to the country of El Salvador where he has worked as a volunteer chiropractor.
Upon graduation in 2001 Dr. Dowell moved from California to northern Virginia to practice. Then in 2004, Dr. Dowell opened his own office in Ashburn, Virginia. After 6 years of successful practice in Ashburn Dr. Dowell and his wife moved to Christiansburg, VA and opened a new practice.
Dr. Dowell has completed post-graduate courses in pediatrics, geriatrics, sports medicine, rehabilitation, and trigger-point therapy. He is currently an ACRB (American Chiropractic Rehab Board) level one certified rehab doctor and is certified in ART (Active Release Technique).
Dr. Dowell specializes in sports and rehabilitation chiropractic. Somewhat similar to a physical therapist or an athletic trainer, Dr. Dowell focuses deeply on how to best restore the natural functions and movements of the human frame. Because of his own experiences with being an athlete and the injuries that accompany athletics and life in general, Dr. Dowell has been able to better understand the needs of the patients who come to see him. Whether it's spending long hours in front of a computer, driving during a commute, or lifting and carrying toddlers and pets, nearly everyone undergoes strenuous physical demands on their body. If the body is injured then the individual can't perform at their best. Each of us needs to be able to work and play at our optimum level; at our maximum potential. Dr. Dowell approaches every patient with that mindset.
Diversified - Diversified Technique is the classic chiropractic technique, developed by D.D. Palmer, DC. and taught in all chiropractic colleges.
Cox Flexion Distraction - This technique allows gentle treatment of the spine through its normal ranges of motion, relieving pressure within the disc, allowing it to heal. Though the technique was developed for disc conditions, it is often effective in relieving uncomplicated back and neck pain as well.
Activator - Activator Methods is based on the postulate that understanding body mechanics and force is the key to understanding how to move bones. A small hand-held instrument is used to deliver a sharp percussive thrust upon triggering. The activator instrument controls the force and speed of the adjustment exceptionally well and with the activator, the line of drive can be more specific.
Palmer Package - Palmer Package includes adjusting procedures taught through one of the Palmer Chiropractic Colleges
